Most Shravan puja guides give you a list. This one gives you the exact steps, the exact mantras, and the exact Vedic reasoning behind each offering - drawn from Sukritya Khatiwada knowledge book and 3 generations of Karma Kanda practice at Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu.
Shravan Shiv puja is not complicated. It is consistent. Shiva responds to sincerity and regularity - a 20-minute daily puja maintained through all 30 days of Shravan carries more spiritual weight than a grand ceremony performed once. This guide is built for that daily practice: clear, complete, and actionable from Day 1.

-
What is Shravan puja vidhi? The complete Shiva puja performed during Shravan month — daily or on each Somvar — consisting of 8 steps: Shuddhi (purification), Sankalpa (intention), Diya lighting, Jalabhishek, Panchamrit Abhishek, Bilva Patra offering, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Japa, and Aarti.
-
Primary mantra: Om Namah Shivaya throughout. Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra — minimum 11 times, ideally 108 times on Shravan Somvar.
-
Most important offering: Bilva (Bael) leaves - the Shiva Purana places this above all other offerings to Shiva.
-
Does Rudraksha matter during puja? The Shiva Purana and Devi Bhagavata Purana state directly: no Shiva puja is complete without the worshipper wearing Rudraksha. A person wearing Rudraksha during puja is Shiva's favourite - and Mantra Japa on a Rudraksha Mala produces unparalleled fruit.
-
Time required: 20–40 minutes for a complete daily puja. 10 minutes for a sincere abbreviated version.

Shravan Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step from Morning to Aarti
The complete Shravan Shiv puja takes 20–40 minutes. Every step below is drawn directly from Sukritya Khatiwada knowledge book and the Vedic Prana Pratishtha tradition practiced at Pashupatinath Temple for 3 generations. Follow all 8 steps for the complete puja. If time is limited - Steps 4, 6, and 7 are the non-negotiable core.
Step 1: Shuddhi - Purification Before Puja
Bathe before beginning any Shravan puja. Wear white, saffron, or yellow clothes. Sit cross-legged facing east in your puja room or any clean, quiet space. Place your Shivling or Shiva image in front of you on a clean cloth or copper plate.
Before anything else, perform brief internal purification by meditating on Lord Vishnu and chanting:
ॐ अपवित्रः पवित्रो वा सर्वावस्थां गतोऽपि वा। यः स्मरेत्पुण्डरीकाक्षं स बाह्याभ्यन्तरः शुचिः॥ Om Apavitraḥ Pavitrō Vā Sarvāvasthāṁ Gatō'pi Vā। Yaḥ Smaret Puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ Sa Bāhyābhyantaraḥ Śuciḥ॥ "Whether pure or impure, whoever remembers Lord Vishnu becomes purified externally and internally."
Then perform Achamanam - ritual purification of body and mind. Sip water from your right palm 3 times while chanting:
- Om Keshavaya Swaha
- Om Narayanaya Swaha
- Om Madhavaya Swaha
Wash hands and chant: Om Govindaya Namah.
Step 2: Sankalpa - Setting Your Intention
Sankalpa is the step that separates a ritual from a routine. It is a conscious Vedic declaration of who you are, why you are performing this puja, and what you seek from it. Without Sankalpa, the puja is a physical act. With it, it becomes a directed karmic offering.
Hold water in your right palm. State your name, Gotra (or Kashyap Gotra if unknown), and Rashi. Then chant the Sankalpa:
ॐ अद्यतन पुण्यदिवसे, शुभसङ्कल्पपूर्वकं। धर्म-अर्थ-काम-मोक्षसिद्ध्यर्थं शिवपूजां करिष्ये। Om Adyatana Puṇya-Divase, Śubha-Saṅkalpa-Pūrvakaṁ। Dharma-Artha-Kāma-Mokṣa-Siddhyarthaṁ Śiva-Pūjāṁ Kariṣye। "On this sacred day, with pure intention, I perform this Shiva puja for the attainment of Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha."
Release the water from your palm after the Sankalpa is complete.
Step 3: Diya Lighting and Ganesh Puja
Light your ghee Diya - the divine witness of all Karma performed in its presence. Chant while lighting:
शुभं करोति कल्याणं आरोग्यं धनसंपदः। शत्रुबुद्धिविनाशाय दीपज्योतिर्नमोऽस्तु ते॥ Śubhaṁ Karoti Kalyāṇaṁ Ārogyaṁ Dhanasaṁpadaḥ। Śatrubuddhi-Vināśāya Dīpajyoti-Namo'stu Te॥ "I bow to the divine flame - may it bring auspiciousness, prosperity, health, and destroy all negative forces."
Before proceeding to Shiva puja, invoke Ganesh - the remover of obstacles - to ensure the puja proceeds without interruption:
वक्रतुंड महाकाय। सूर्यकोटि समप्रभ। निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव। सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥ Vakratuṇḍa Mahākāya। Sūryakoṭi Samaprabha। Nirvighnaṁ Kuru Me Deva। Sarvakāryeṣu Sarvadā॥ "O Ganesha — remove all obstacles from this puja and all my endeavors, always and forever."
Optionally offer a flower to Ganesha after chanting.
Step 4: Jalabhishek - Offering Water to the Shivling
Jalabhishek is the act of pouring water over the Shivling - the most fundamental and most significant offering of Shravan month. Every drop of water poured is a re-enactment of the gods cooling Neelkantha - Shiva who held the Halahal poison in his throat to save all of creation. This is not symbolic. It is an act of direct, conscious gratitude.
Pour Gangajal or clean water over the Shivling in a steady, continuous stream. Chant continuously while pouring:
ॐ नमः शिवाय। Om Namah Shivaya
Pour water 3 times, 11 times, or 108 times - depending on your time and depth of observance. On Shravan Somvar, 108 pourings is the complete practice.

Step 5: Panchamrit Abhishek
Panchamrit Abhishek is the offering of 5 sacred substances to the Shivling - each carrying a distinct Vedic purpose for the worshipper. Pour each in sequence while chanting Om Namah Shivaya continuously.
| Substance |
Chant while pouring |
Vedic purpose |
| Milk (Dugdham) |
Om Namah Shivaya |
Divine nourishment - offered for health and vitality |
| Curd (Dadhi) |
Om Namah Shivaya |
Eliminates negative karma of the worshipper |
| Ghee (Ghritam) |
Om Namah Shivaya |
Ignites and stabilises spiritual energy |
| Honey (Madhu) |
Om Namah Shivaya |
Attracts divine blessings and grace |
| Sugar or jaggery (Sharkara) |
Om Namah Shivaya |
Balances the energy of the entire offering |
Step 6: Bilva Patra Offering
The Bilva leaf offering is the most important single act of the entire Shravan Shiv puja. The Shiva Purana states explicitly: a single Bilva leaf offered with sincere devotion is equivalent to all other offerings combined.
Offer Bilva leaves in sets of 3 - the 3 leaves represent the 3 eyes of Shiva, the Trimurti (Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva), and the 3 aspects of creation, preservation, and dissolution. Place each set on the Shivling while chanting:
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे। बिल्वपत्रं शिवार्पणम्। Om Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe। Bilvapatraṁ Śivārpaṇam। "I worship the three-eyed Shiva and offer this Bilva leaf as a sacred offering."
Alternatively, chant Om Namah Shivaya with each Bilva offering. Offer a minimum of 3 sets (9 leaves). On Shravan Somvar, 11 sets is the traditional count.

Step 7: Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Japa
The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is the most powerful Rudra invocation in the Yajurveda - chanted in the month of Rudra's peak energy, on a Rudraksha Mala, it is the single most powerful mantra practice available during Shravan.
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥
Om Tryambakaṁ Yajāmahe Sugandhiṁ Puṣṭivardhanam। Urvārukamiva Bandhanān Mṛtyormukṣīya Māmṛtāt॥
"We worship the three-eyed Shiva who permeates and nourishes all. As a cucumber is severed from its vine, may we be liberated from death — and granted immortality."
Count guidance:
- Daily Shravan puja: 11 times minimum
- Shravan Somvar (Monday fast): 33 times or 108 times
- Shivratri or special observances: 108 full rounds on Rudraksha Mala
Hold your Rudraksha Mala on the Anamika (ring) finger. Rotate each bead with the Angushtha (thumb). Do not cross the Guru bead - turn the mala and begin again. One complete round = 108 repetitions.
The Shiva Purana states: Mantra Japa performed on a Rudraksha Mala produces fruit unmatched by any other method. During Shravan - when Rudra's energy is at its annual peak - this amplification is at its highest.
This is why every Shravan puja performed with a Nepali Rudraksha Mala → carries incomparably greater effect than the same puja without one.
Step 8: Aarti and Close
Complete the puja with Aarti — the waving of the ghee lamp in clockwise circles before the Shivling, 3 or 7 times. Aarti is the final act of complete surrender: the fire, the light, and the motion together represent the offering of the ego to Shiva.
Chant while performing Aarti:
जय शिव ओंकारा, ॐ जय शिव ओंकारा। ब्रह्मा विष्णु सदाशिव, अर्द्धांगी धारा॥ Jaya Śiva Oṁkārā, Om Jaya Śiva Oṁkārā। Brahmā Viṣṇu Sadāśiva, Arddhāṅgī Dhārā॥
After Aarti, distribute Prasad within the household. Offer water (Arghya) to Lord Surya if performing morning puja. The puja is complete.
Closing mantra
ॐ तत्सत् ब्रह्मार्पणमस्तु। Om Tatsat Brahmārpaṇamastu। "This offering is surrendered to the divine. So be it."

How Rudraksha Amplifies Every Step of Shravan Puja?
The Shiva Purana and Devi Bhagavata Purana state this directly: no Shiva puja is complete without the worshipper wearing Rudraksha. This is not a recommendation - it is a scriptural requirement. Every priest and Pujari performing Shiva puja across the world wears Rudraksha for exactly this reason.
3 things happen when you perform Shravan puja while wearing Rudraksha:
1. Your Avahana (divine invocation) becomes more potent. Rudraksha is one of the most powerful tools for attracting divine energy. A person wearing Rudraksha during puja creates a stronger field of Shiva's presence in the puja space - the invocation reaches deeper.
2. You become Shiva's favourite. The Shiva Purana states this without qualification: a person wearing Rudraksha is most dear to Shiva. During Shravan - when Shiva's energy is most responsive - this proximity produces the most direct results of any puja practice available.
3. Your Mantra Japa becomes unparalleled. The Padma Purana confirms: any mantra practiced without Rudraksha gives limited, time-bound fruit. The same mantra on a Rudraksha Mala gives limitless benefit. During Shravan, this amplification is at its annual peak.
