Maha Shivaratri - “the Great Night of Shiva” - is one of the most important observances dedicated to Lord Shiva.
It is a night centred on Shiva Puja, Abhishekam, mantra, fasting, meditation and Jagran - remaining awake in remembrance of Shiva.
Unlike festivals centred primarily on outward celebration, Maha Shivaratri is traditionally a night of Sadhana and inward attention.

Date & Puja Timings Coming Soon
We will update this guide with the 2027 Maha Shivaratri date, Nishita Kaal and Nepal-specific Puja timings once the festival Panchanga is finalized.
What Is the Significance of Maha Shivaratri?
Maha Shivaratri is observed in honour of Lord Shiva. Different Shaiva traditions connect the night with different sacred narratives, including:
- the union of Shiva and Shakti,
- Shiva's Tandava,
- and Shiva's manifestation as the infinite Jyotirlinga.
The current article already brings together these traditions. Rather than trying to prove that one event is the single historical “reason” for the festival, the deeper theme can be expressed more simply:
Maha Shivaratri is a night to turn attention away from distraction and toward Shiva.
- For a Sadhak, that may mean mantra.
- For a devotee, Puja and Abhishekam.
- For another person, silence, fasting or simply remaining awake in remembrance of Mahadev.
How Is Maha Shivaratri Observed?
Practices vary by family, temple and Sampradaya, but common observances include:
Shiva Abhishekam
A Shiva Linga may be offered water and other traditional offerings during Puja.
Bilva Offering
Bilva leaves are traditionally offered to Lord Shiva.
Mantra Japa
The simplest mantra for the night is:
ॐ नमः शिवाय - Om Namah Shivaya
The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra may also be included in a more established Shiva Sadhana.
Jagran
Many devotees remain awake during the night in prayer, mantra, meditation or Shiva Katha. The purpose should not become a competition about staying awake. Jagran is remembrance of Shiva.
Upavasa
Some devotees observe a complete fast, while others follow fruit, milk or other permitted fasting foods according to their tradition and circumstances.
A Simple Maha Shivaratri Sadhana at Home
You do not need an elaborate ritual to observe Maha Shivaratri. A simple practice can be:
1. Prepare your Puja space
Bathe, wear clean clothes and sit in a quiet place.
2. Light a diya
Begin with remembrance of Shiva.
3. Offer water and Bilva
If you have a Shiva Linga, perform a simple Abhishekam according to your family or Guru tradition.
4. Chant Om Namah Shivaya
Use a Rudraksha Japa Mala if you already have one.
You may perform 108 repetitions, or a count you can maintain attentively.
5. Sit silently
After the mantra, remain in meditation or silent remembrance. If you observe Jagran, the practice may be repeated during the night. The goal is not to create the longest ritual. It is to remain present in the Sadhana.
What Is the Connection Between Maha Shivaratri and Rudraksha?
Rudraksha has a direct relationship with Rudra and Shiva, which makes it naturally relevant to Shiva-oriented Sadhana.
But we do not need to claim:
“Rudraksha becomes 1,000 times stronger on Shivaratri.”
or
“Every mantra is exponentially amplified.”
The spiritual connection is already meaningful without numerical potency claims.
1 Mukhi Rudraksha - Sadashiva
The Nepa Rudraksha knowledge framework describes the 1 Mukhi Rudraksha as directly associated with Sadashiva and Advaita - oneness. For an advanced Shiva-focused Sadhana, this gives 1 Mukhi a particularly important position.
11 Mukhi Rudraksha - Ekadasha Rudra
The 11 Mukhi Rudraksha represents the eleven forms of Rudra - Ekadasha Rudra. The book also describes its use in Rudra mantra Sadhana and meditation.
That makes the 11 Mukhi one of the clearest Rudraksha to discuss in connection with Shiva and Rudra practice.
5 Mukhi Rudraksha - Kalagni Rudra
The 5 Mukhi Rudraksha is ruled by Kalagni Rudra and is one of the most widely used Rudraksha for beginning a regular Rudraksha Sadhana.
For many devotees, a 5 Mukhi Japa Mala is also a practical way to perform Om Namah Shivaya Japa.

How Maha Shivaratri Differs from Monthly Shivaratri
A Shivaratri (Shiva's night) occurs on the 13th or 14th day of every lunar month - 12 times a year. Maha Shivaratri (the Great Shiva Night) occurs just once annually, in the month of Phalguna (February–March). It is considered 1,000 times more potent than a monthly Shivaratri, because planetary positions align to maximise Shiva's cosmic influence on human consciousness. Traditional teachers compare the difference to a full solar eclipse vs. a partial one.
Which Rudraksha Should You Wear on Maha Shivaratri?
There is no requirement that everyone must buy a new Rudraksha for Maha Shivaratri. If you already wear Rudraksha, simply continue your regular Dharana and Sadhana. If your spiritual focus is specifically Shiva-oriented, these associations are useful:
| Rudraksha |
Shiva connection |
| 1 Mukhi |
Sadashiva |
| 5 Mukhi |
Kalagni Rudra |
| 11 Mukhi |
Ekadasha Rudra |
Can You Wear a Rudraksha for the First Time on Maha Shivaratri?
You can begin Rudraksha Dharana as part of a sincere Shiva Sadhana. But it is important to distinguish between:
first wearing / Rudraksha Dharana
and
Prana Pratishtha.
Prana Pratishtha is a complete Vedic energization process; it is not simply soaking a bead in water or Panchamrit and chanting one mantra at home.
If your Rudraksha has already undergone Prana Pratishtha, your personal first-wearing practice can focus on purification, Sankalpa, Shiva mantra and the Beej Mantra of your Mukhi.
This is more accurate than the current page's instruction that a bead can simply be “energised” at home with Panchamrit on Shivaratri. The existing article presents that simplified procedure as energization.
What Mantra Should You Chant on Maha Shivaratri?
For a simple Shiva practice:
Om Namah Shivaya
ॐ नमः शिवाय
This is the clearest mantra for most devotees.
If you already wear Rudraksha, you may also continue the Beej Mantra associated with your Mukhi.
For a more established practice, the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra may also be included.
There is no need to continuously add mantras to make the night “more powerful.” One mantra practised with attention is better than many mantras performed without focus.
Do You Have to Stay Awake All Night?
Jagran is an important Maha Shivaratri observance, but the purpose is devotional wakefulness, not physical strain for its own sake.
A person may spend the night in:
mantra, meditation, Shiva Puja, scripture, Bhajan or silent remembrance.
If health, age or other circumstances make an all-night vigil unsuitable, Sadhana can still be performed sincerely within one's capacity.
Is Fasting Mandatory?
Fasting is a traditional part of Maha Shivaratri observance, but practices vary.
Some devotees observe a complete Upavasa.
Others consume fruit, milk or permitted fasting foods.
The important point is to follow your tradition and your physical capacity rather than treating severe fasting as a measure of devotion.
Conclusion
Maha Shivaratri is ultimately not about making the night complicated.
It is a night for Shiva. Perform Abhishekam if it is part of your tradition.
- Offer Bilva.
- Chant Om Namah Shivaya.
- Observe Upavasa or Jagran according to your capacity.
- Meditate.
And if Rudraksha is already part of your Sadhana, wear it with awareness rather than treating the festival as a reason to continually add new beads.
The simplest Maha Shivaratri practice is also one of the deepest: remember Shiva.
Har Har Mahadev.
