A rudraksha japa mala is suited to anyone who chants mantras - from complete beginners performing their first 108-count practice to advanced Sadhak performing dedicated planetary Beej Mantra Japa. There are no restrictions on gender, age, or astrological position. The 5 Mukhi Japa Mala, associated with Jupiter (Brihaspati), is the recommended starting point for beginners as it is considered universal in its application for general sadhana.

Those performing specific planetary Japa should select their mala based on the Mukhi corresponding to their practice - for example, a 7 Mukhi for Shani (Saturn) Japa, a 9 Mukhi for Rahu/Devi Japa, or a 12 Mukhi for Surya (Sun) Japa.
Using a rudraksha mala for chanting follows a specific technique confirmed in the book. Place the mala on the Anamika (ring) finger - the Prithvi (Earth) element finger that provides stability, grounding, and prosperity. Rotate each bead with the Angushtha (thumb) - the Agni (Fire) element finger that ignites and activates the mantra. Move one bead per mantra repetition.

Nepali Japa Mala beads are 15–18 mm - noticeably larger and immediately distinguishable by size. The mantra is determined by the Mukhi of the Japa Mala.
